Our people
Ruth Bartles
I am the Director of Remember When Sheffield Ltd, and Manager of the Remember When cafe.
I am Sheffield born and bred, I am proud of, and care deeply about Sheffield. I worked for 18 years in higher education and left to open the cafe.
In 2015 I gained a distinction in my postgraduate module 'Contemporary issues in brain and behaviour: the biology, psychology and sociology of dementia and psychosis'.
Brenda Bartles
I am the baker for the cafe, as well as helping out when I can.
I used to be a teacher and enjoyed spending time with my mum Eileen.
I have many years of baking experience under my belt and my favourite recipe is chocolate cake.
I'm Ruth's Nan and have been the inspiration for the Remember When cafe.
I have 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grand-children. I worked as a civil servant and I spent a lot of time barn-dancing, rambling and doing yoga.
About us
since 2017
After a full and happy life I sadly passed away in January 2021. I enjoyed going out with my daughters, and I particularly liked going out for meals where the place wasn't too busy and we could get nice food - especially sherry trifle. I played a mean game of scrabble and did lots of crossword puzzles.

Eddie Bartles
We're Eddie and Billy, Ruth's sons.
You used to find us in the cafe during the school holidays, but now we give it a miss!
Eddie liked to be behind the scenes making coffee,
while Billy enjoyed meeting and serving people.
Billy Bartles
I'm Rolo, and I was the official meeter and greeter for the cafe. I loved the fuss that I got from customers and was very well behaved. My favourite thing was cheese, although I retired during the lockdown and passed away in 2022.
